The Dark Past

The following content is not a Fan Fiction or anything like this. Based on the existing evidences, mainly his special items, it was possible to be the first person to write a reasonable theory to explain the great man David is. Of course, a collection of invisible items is something completely unreal even because no character is part of all scenarios but these items are very useful to provide some important clues or evidences about the character's background. Gathering all of them is the work done in this section.

Childhood

It is a fact that David was a delinquent kid. According to the description of 'Steel Chain', David says he doesn't like looking at chains because it reminds him the handcuffs he wore as a delinquent kid. David didn't go to college, probably because of his bad behavior at school; not the troublesome type of student, but someone who used to miss classes when pissed off. Absolutely nothing about his family is reported or suggested throughout the game. The lack of information about relatives and his lone behavior are great evidences to show they were not giving support to him on this crucial time of his life. The most reasonable thing to think is that they died when he was young and since then he was by himself. He had to fight for what he wanted since his childhood even not knowing exactly the way he should follow. Even if he had a relative or anyone else to look after him, this person could not offer him the basics for a good future. Therefore, it's completely possible his involvement with gangs later on his youth age once not receiving the necessary instructions for thinking better before making a decision. Joining mafia was probably the easiest way he had to obtain the essential for his life, at least, for the moment being.

Jouvenile Delinquente

Be strong was something strictly necessary when facing severe consequences brought by his illegal actions as a gangster. This was the moment that he learned most of the surviving skills he uses to fight against his worst nightmare. A good member of a gang needs to be strong, fast and be ready to handle any kind of weapon supplied. Like in a jungle, just the strong - or smart - beings would survive; a feature that depended only on personal struggle. Scenes of violence like robbery, fights and murder were probably very common and problems with cops were inevitable. This is the main reason why he does not get along with policemen unless he has no choice.

His taste for blades was probably a consequence of the need of use of this white and portable weapon. David knows exactly how to use several kinds of blades when he faces them as shown on the following special items: 'Lion ring', a ring with a raging lion's face craved on it that could fuck up somebody's face in a bar fight; 'Lion bracelet', designed to look like a pair of lion's claws which has awfully sharp points; 'Switchblade ring', a ring which has a tiny button that releases a blade and even being to small to be practical, it can still be used as a weapon; 'Beast claw', a hand-to-hand fighting weapon that you wear on your wrist and shouldn't be used without proper training and 'Small file', small metal file with a sharp edge that might make a good weapon. Some of them are apparently ordinary objects but they can turn into a useful weapon when properly handled.

Knives are the most common type of blade specially made for better handling. He so improved his movements according to his need in order to be able of performing a deadly combo when using one this kind of weapon. His taste for them is expressed on knives like 'Lion Knife', an expensive-looking knife with a lion craved on handle, a kind of collector's piece and 'Swiss army knife' which has a broken part, but everything else works fine. He also has no difficulty in dealing with other kind of weapons like firearms because he probably had to deal with them during this period for a major safety in certain occasions.

Additionally, there are the guidebooks reporting strategies for survival suggesting he looked for ways of improving his abilities like 'Survival tips' lists some of them and 'Survive!' details ways of surviving fires and other disasters and shows you can only rely on yourself and not on a book. This last book is also as a way of revealing his trust on himself much more than on others and his preference for walking alone in many situations. One last suggestion is the 'Strainer' once "Securing water is the most important part of survival. That's why you've gotta have a good strainer with you."

Transformation

His tastes reveal that David is a Native American but there are many ways of showing his fascination for Japanese culture and history. Japanese comic books were probably part of his childhood; 'School Spirt' is an English translation of one of them. Clothing with writings on it was probably one of his preferred ones during young age as the 'Japanese Jacket' suggests; a jacket that he guess it was pretty popular. The 'Lion wooden sword', a Japanese souvenir of some kind with a lion crest carved into it, is another way of showing his taste for Japanese stuff.

Japanese culture is an incredibly rich one and usually calls the attention of many people in several ways and it was not different with him until that moment. There is a part of a Japanese martial art well-known throughout the world that requires basically all those features he already developed and suits his strong personality but a change on his behavior was necessary. This martial art called Bushido or "The Way of the Warrior" gathers basically his strength and taste for blades but in order to fight for good purposes, according to its seven codes - justice, bravery, veracity, honor, loyalty, politeness and benevolence. His taste for Japan in general certainly leaded him to meet with this fascinating martial art and rethink about things he had done. Like a light at the end of the tunnel, learning more about Bushido can be seen as the way he used to start changing his life by himself.

Certainly getting out of a gang after some time is not an easy job. That was probably the only moment he felt into despair with the unpleasant situation he was living. A moment of flashbacks of everything wrong done coming to mind and he trying to get rid of it without success as a consequence of his impulsive actions not just because his mind did not allow; he had a duty assigned with others who did not allow him to just give up. He was living his first nightmare in life.

David being responsible by himself since early age turned everything even more difficult for him. For leaving the gangster life once for all, it was necessary to look for something else to work on; something that he could use to gain his money honestly but not something could choose at first. It is possible to say the plumber trade was not his choice among a set of options but his only option because a good person appeared in his life to teach him the basics of this trade. He is not lazy and not the kind of person who stops on the middle of the way. Finishing what he started is something essential. He is unstoppable until reaching his goal because he fights for it until the end. Moving forward without looking back facing all difficulties, his taste for the new job just increased as the time passed.
